Hypnosis: What It Is And What It Is Not
In the scientific world, hypnosis still cannot be easily or absolutely defined. It is easier to talk about what it is not rather than what it is.
I have had a hypnosis practice for 30 years. The most common fear I hear is that a hypnotherapist can make you do something you don’t want to do. And that you are going to go down under. Or folks ask me to put them down under. Which means they will be asleep or lose consciousness.
Hypnosis is different from slumber. In a hypnotic state , you are aware of your surroundings, you are hearing sounds, and smelling smells, being aware of movements and in control of your actions. Consciousness is not lost: it becomes more selective. You become more aware of internal processes than in the outside worlds activities and distractions. You can even select what you want to be aware of, allowing yourself to focus on solving a problem or just enjoying relaxation.
What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?
There are many different explanations and theories about what hypnosis is and how it works. Dr. Milton Erickson (called the father of Hypnosis) or Ericksonian Hypnosis sees it as a natural and everyday part of life, allowing clients to have greater potential for problem solving and creativity.
Cheek and LeCron in Clinical Hypnotherapy define hypnosis as “a state of having increased suggestibility, literalness of understanding to comply with optimistic suggestions.
Some theorists state “hypnosis does not exist at all! If true, it is even more amazing that people can have surgery using hypnosis for pain control and “pretend?” to feel nothing.
Though we cannot absolutely define hypnosis, our knowledge of it is increasing and there is much ongoing research. We now have brain scans that show improvement with hypnosis and meditation, which are pretty much the same thing. We see PTSD scans that have shown improvement in the brain. Hypnosis can occur spontaneously in response to stress, allowing us to remain calm in a crisis, so we can cope with the trauma effectively.
The hypnotized will only do that which is acceptable to them; censoring everything the hypnotist does or says and responding according to their own beliefs and values. Dr. Fred Frankel, professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and head of a clinic for therapeutic hypnosis, said, in 1976 Clinicians only can help patients to the degree that patients are prepared to let them. Hypnosis involves no loss of mental control. The skilled practitioner will help clients become more discriminating in their available choices; clearly defining the desirable changes and facilitating ready accomplishment.
What is Stage Hypnotism?
Stage hypnosis gives the impression that hypnotized people wil obey any command. Parre of the skill of a STAGE PERFORMER is in pre setting up his subjects so this appears to happen. The famous American hypnotherapist Ormond McGill says that 20 percent of the population is able to develop a trance suitable for the state that the shows tend to attract a greater portion of these people. From this group the performer selects his subject, and by the time they have reached the stage, they have already completed a complex selection process, designed to find the most obedient and compliant individuals in the audience. Even by volunteering to go up, they are already committing themselves to become a part of the act. Those who do volunteer are safeguarded from doing anything offensive because they are able to ignore the hypnotist or come out of trance whenever they want. You have probably seen this if you have seen a stage act. The hypnotist will often send the individual back to their chair if they don’t cooperate. And if they do let their hair down, they will always be able to claim the hypnotist was responsible for their actions! Stage hypnotists, like other practitioners have no special “powers” and cannot force people to act against their will.
What is Ericksonian Hypnosis?
Hypnosis does encourage greater mental agility, creating opportunities for changes in behavior allowing different perspectives on problems and providing flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances. Hypnosis enables us to use our subconscious (some call it unconscious) resources for changing behavior. Dr. Milton Erickson regarded the subconscious as “a very powerful and constructive force for life which should be fully used.
Daniel Dunnett, the British Scientist, concluded after a serious of experiments that quiet outside our consciousness, our brain in carrying out elaborate and sophisticated activities. You’re intelligent, but your subconscious is a darned sight smarter!
All Hypnosis is Self Hypnosis. It occurs every day of our lives, like watching television, reading a book, day dreaming. These are all examples of altered states. When entering into a hypnotic state there is a feeling of relaxation, which sometimes comes quickly and sometimes it takes practice or repeatedness. Everyone is unique and enter this state in their own way. Some examples of experiencing trance are:
- Tingles in the fingers and sometimes toes.
- Lightness or heaviness in the limbs
- Sometimes increased swallowing
- A feeling of well being and total relaxation
- Flickering eyelids
- Change in movement
- This varies from person to person.

Hypnosis for Smoking Cessation
What is Smoking Cessation
Normally when people contemplate smoking cessation, they reflect on the negative implications that smoking has had and will like have upon their lives in the future. For those with loved ones and family, the reality becomes even more bleak when one considers the certainty of the odds that smoking wi
ll lead to future health complications if it is not resolved.
Why is Stop Smoking Hypnosis an Important Component in Smoking Cessation?
Smoking cessation is a proactive approach to changing the stimuli and behaviors related to the habit of smoking or using tobacco products. For many people, changing stimuli isn’t easily done unless associated beliefs regarding identity and cause are also addressed, and this can be done using hypnosis to quit smoking. For those who have tried to quiet smoking unsuccessfully in the past, the best way stop smoking is to use hypnosis for smoking cessation. Stopping smoking is not a conscious decision for most people.
You Can Successfully Learn How to Stop Smoking
Very few people wake up one morning, decide to stop smoking and then never have the urge to smoke again in their lives. If understanding how to stop smoking was a conscious decision, you would simply just make up your mind to stop and it would be final. This is why using hypnosis to stop smoking is so effective. It helps a person to override specific unconscious triggers, beliefs and behaviors that all play together to keep a habit functioning. When these aspects of smoking are disconnected and changed, then a person finds that he or she is free to stop smoking and to have more empowering responses to the old scenarios that used to trigger the urge to smoke.
How to Stop Smoking With Hypnotherapy
Before beginning with smoking cessation, it might help to analyze your everyday habits and routines. Here are some questions you might want to consider:
What would I do differently if I were to quit smoking?
What would change about my identify if I quit smoking
What has been keeping you smoking?
Beginning with the end in mind is a powerful way to change any habit, especially nicotine addiction. Smoking has the potential to kill you and although it feels like a physical addiction, it is largely mental. People smoke because at an unconscious level they believe it does something positive for them (like calming a person down).
How Will Your Life Change After You Stop Smoking
Imagine for a second that you do successfully quit smoking. A year from now, what activities might you find yourself doing that are different? A common list of things I have heard from my past clients are:
- Exercising differently; including running
- Not smelling like tobacco smoke
- Having whiter teeth
- Being able to breath better
- A sense of feeling healthy
- Knowing that avoidable health concerns are not an issue
What specifically will change for you as you decide to stop smoking You’ll be breathing easier and living longer.
